7 STEPS TO A DYNAMIC PRESENTATION
| PERFORMANCE BASED TRAININGWhat is important when giving a presentation?
Was ist wichtig bei dynamischen Präsentationen?
The reason for a good preparation before giving a compelling presentation is because many people experience stage fright. This means the heart is racing, palms are sweating and breathing suddenly feels labored. If speaking in public makes you feel like you're fighting for your life, you're not alone. However, the better you understand your body's reaction, the more likely you are to overcome it. One reason is we are very social people therefore we care what other people think of us and our reputation is very important to us. Instead of being highjacked by our physical indications of fight and flight response we need to acknowledge that stage fright is a normal hormonal state of each person and secondly, we need to practice and simulate the real situation of the presentation so that we can overcome any uncertainty and reach a stage where we can relax so that we are able to present ideas which paint a memorable picture in everyone’s minds. The seven steps to dynamic presentation will give you the tools to become a successful presenter for both new ideas and factual information.
What is the method for dynamic presentations?
Wie sieht die Methode für dynamische Präsentationen aus?
A presentation has a beginning, a middle and an end, i.e. tell the listeners what you are going to tell them, tell them the main message, then tell them what you’ve told them so far (Dale Carnegie). As with many other topics, all roads lead to Rome. Therefore, the goal is to identify one's own authentic presentational method. However, there are some useful suggestions of how to structure and perform a successful presentation. For instance, TED talks offer great examples and methods for compelling presentations. Most of these follow three principles of: speak from the heart, i.e. be authentic and passionate about your talk. Secondly, share new information or teach the listener something new. Finally, create a memorable impact which will last forever.
What are the 7 steps to a dynamic presentation
Wie ist die Methodik für die 7 Schritte der dynamischen Präsentation?
1. How to open and close a presentation – this focuses on the primacy and recency effect when it comes to memory and why it is important to keep those two ends close to each other
2. How to create a smooth structure. This can be achieved by navigating through the presentation in order to show the risks and opportunities of a proposed idea.
3. How to visualize facts and figures – this can be achieved by avoiding the overflow of data from “slideuments” (a document in a slide). The working memory of our brain is only able to store 5 to 7 new pieces of information and only for a short time. Moreover, the brain processes very quickly in the limbic system by means of seeing. Therefore, it is important to create a strong visual memory point.
4. How to use body language and voice power to support the content in a dynamic presentation. Lynne Franklin teaches you how to connect with 3 types of people by understanding how their bodies communicate. For example, the looker or visual type focuses on being well dressed and being in a good physical shape, whereas the hearer or audio type prefers listening to people and finally the kinesthetic or emotional type prefers physical contact to people. Therefore, the first type prefers a language such as “Do you see what I mean?”. The second type prefers “Can you hear what I’m saying?”. And finally, the third type prefers “How do you feel about my ideas?”. I his book “Sound Business”, Julian Treasure refers to the old saying: it’s not just what you say, it’s also the tone that makes the music.
5. How to build rapport with an international audience. Based on our individual finger prints and iris, everyone perceives the world in their own reality. Therefore, presentations have to consider visual, auditory, logical, spatial, interpersonal or intrapersonal intelligences. Erin Meyer (2014) in her book “The Culture Map”, describes how important it is to understand the codes of various cultures and how to present not only in a language which can be understood but which also aligns with the culture and personalities.
6. How to use impact techniques to leave an everlasting impression. Social anthropologists argue that we live in stories rather than in realities. Therefore, it is important to tell a story which is both credible and believable. Secondly, Robert Cialdini (2007) has created the “Six Principles of Influence” in which he describes ethical ways to convince the audience of both messages and content.
7. How to make the Q&A session an opportunity for discussion. Although some believe it’s too risky to be highjacked with questions at the end of a presentation, it can also be an opportunity for dealing with real and challenging issues which were not considered prior to the presentation.
What will be learned and practiced?
What is the success and what can be done after the training?
Was wird im Training gelernt und geübt?
Was ist der Erfolg und was kann nach dem Training getan werden?
The training consists of three parts. Firstly, it is important to be prepared. Therefore, there will be many links to online content such as videos and short articles. Secondly, the main seminar will be focusing on presenting in action, therefore, the title "Performance Based Training". There will be a short introduction to some concepts and principles. The next step is then to practice those which are useful and relevant in real contexts. Finally, there will a feedback session to reflect on the action, experience and what can be improved in the future.
